The Photographs -- Part I

Smoke and Candles -- This image was taken in Rokuhara Chinkouji temple during Obon. The ethereal form in the top half of the image is actually a person wearing a white shirt walking by. The exposure time was about 4 seconds.

Maiko -- This photograph, as all of the others, was taken without planning. What appears to be water spraying across the image is actually a spotlight illuminating cherry blossoms. This intense light played around within the lens, creating effects that could not even be seen clearly in the viewfinder. The exposure was about three seconds and truly was a lucky guess.

Incense Hut -- this photograph was taken in Rokuhara Chinkouji temple during Obon. Visitors to the temple were burning incense, the haze floating into the sky. The exposure was about 45 seconds.

Kamo Falls -- This photograph was taken on the Kamo River near the Sanjo bridge. The shallow water of the Kamo caused the ripples to appear in consistent patterns, rather than as a blur. The exposure was about five minutes.

Sake Boat -- A boat with bails of sake contrasts with the modern building in the background. This photo was taken with 3200-speed Kodak T-Max film and had an exposure time of less than a minute.

Legs -- I had set up my tripod in the Gion hoping to take a picture of the palm reader when a woman walked by. The shutter was open for about three or four seconds. A faint image of her leg can be seen to the left of the more distinct legs.
